KARAOKE est un mot composé en Japonais du terme "kara" qui signifie "vide" (à partir du mot Japonais Karappo) et du terme "oke" qui est un diminutif du terme japonais "okesutora" signifiant orchestre. Des bandes enregistrées avec de la musique (sans la dimension vocale) sont appelées "karaokés".
