Xét về từ nguyên, Karaoke là một từ ghép trong tiếng Nhật với từ "Kara" được lấy từ chữ "Karappo" có nghĩa là trống rỗng, còn từ "Oke" được viết tắt từ chữ "Okesutura" có nghĩa là dàn nhạc. Do vậy, Karaoke được hiểu là dàn nhạc không có giọng hát.
